Put another Chick on the Bobby, Jack!

Another beautiful spring week here in the Big Apple. . .the sky is blue, the sun is warm, and the subway is beginning to put off that musky, reassuring odor that reminds you where you are.

The highlight of the week was seeing a memorable performance by Bobby McFerrin, Chick Corea, and Jack DeJohnette at Carnegie Hall. Individually, the three musicians are as good as it gets. Bobby McFerrin is a uniquely talented vocalist (emphasis on 'unique'), as well as a renowned classical conductor. Chick Corea is one of the world's preeminent jazz pianists. And, finally, Jack DeJohnette is one of the best drummers in the history of jazz, having collaborated with every major jazz figure since the 1960's, including Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and Thelonius Monk.

Together, the three put on a memorable performance, ninety straight minutes of unplanned improvisation. While they mostly played modern jazz, at various points in the concert, the music morphed into opera, blues, dixieland, audience-participation call and response, hip-hop, and a brief soccer match onstage between Chick Corea and Jack DeJohnette using a tambourine. Seriously. It was truly one-of-a-kind.

Thursday, we met for a picnic lunch at Bryant Park, where we ate sandwiches and sat with a thousand of our closest friends on the lawn. It was toasty enough for Katy to wear shorts and a short-sleeved shirt. . .and still be warm. Thursday night (pizza night, of course), we made Pita-Pizza at home, which is actually quite good. (Take some pita bread, throw some sauce, cheese, pepperoni, mushrooms, and oregano on top, and put it in the toaster oven at 350 degrees until the cheese is bubbly. Then, take it out and enjoy. But only on Thursdays.)

Friday evening, Erik went to a company-wide happy hour at work, where they brought in beer, wine, and a smorgasbord of pan-Asian cuisine (Chinese, Japanese, and Thai). After coming home, we ordered our dinner delivered from Blockheads, a yummy burrito shop in the neighborhood. It was kind of funny to have chips & guacamole delivered in a Chinese-food takeout container, though.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

With love,

Katy & Erik

Any restaurant that uses sock-monkeys as the official mascot has my vote! Menu looks awesome - are we eating there when I come to town? Love, Mom
