Week One: Raw Fish & Cupcakes

Katy and I have wrapped up our first "real" week in NYC. Erik made it through his five days at the new job, and all indications are that he gets to go back on Monday. Meanwhile, Katy is choosing between two job offers from Banana Republic and Club Monaco, respectively, both of which are just a short walk from our new home.

Here's a quick recap of the week's events. . .

Tuesday. . .After Erik got home from work and Katy returned home from an interview, we made some Bagel Bites in our awesome new toaster oven! (This is the first toaster oven we have ever owned, and now we use it every day.) Unfortunately, because we are now walking several miles every day, a box of bagel bites just doesn't fill us up like it used to. So, after dinner, Erik headed up a few blocks on 1st Avenue and found some Thai food from Sa-Woy to bring home for dessert. Amazingly, you actually have to pass two other Thai restaurants on the way to Sa-Woy. There aren't that many Thai restaurants in Thailand.

Wednesday. . .Katy met Erik at his office after work, and we headed up to the Upper West Side (that's right folks, the other side of town!). There, we met Deborah Grausman, a friend of Erik's from college. Deborah has been a New Yorker her whole life, and she currently works as a singer and actress in the City. The three of us had dinner at Pasha, a wonderful little Turkish restaurant in her neighborhood. We capped that off with some yummy cupcakes from Magnolia, a famous NYC bakery. Finally, after a quick tour of Deborah's apartment, which overlooks the Lincoln Center, we took our first bus ride across Central Park, back to the Upper East Side, and headed home.

Thursday. . .Many of you know that Thursday night has for a while been Katy & Erik's pizza night! For several years, that always meant some frozen DiGiorno or Freschetta, and the occasional Papa John's delivery when we were feeling frisky. So, we hit the streets on a beautiful, warm Thursday evening and found some great Italian food and pizza at Petaluma, just a couple blocks from our apartment. Let the record show that as part of our mixed antipasto appetizer we ate, among other things, (1) squid (2) octopus (3) fried green olives, and a few things that weren't quite identifiable. It was a very pleasant evening.

Friday. . .We had some dinner at the apartment, but the night is still young. . .we'll just have to see!

We still promise to post apartment pictures before too long. All of our furniture (except for a desk chair) has arrived, but our desk is still in a box, our artwork has yet to be hung, and we still don't know where to put all of our stuff.

Since this entire post so far has been about food, we might as well continue. Erik had 48 hours of very interesting eating this week. How's this for a gastronomic circus?

Tuesday night - Bagel Bites & Thai food
Wednesday morning - Peaches & Cream Instant Oatmeal
Wednesday lunch - Sushi. . .and lots of it.
Wednesday dinner - Turkish food.
Thursday breakfast - Bagel from a street vendor.
Thursday lunch - Sushi again. Seriously.
Thursday dinner - Italian, including the aforementioned squid, octopus, and fried olives.

And the winner is? Pepto-bismol.

We don't know yet what we are going to do this weekend, but we'll let you know once it's done!

With love,

Katy & Erik
